Throughout February Monmouth Arts is highlighting Black artists from New Jersey for Black History Month. Our third is singer and actress Whitney Houston, who was born in Newark in 1963.
Houston, the most awarded female artist to date, released her debut album in 1985 at age 22, earning three number one singles and topping the Billboard chart for 14 weeks. From there Houston was launched to stardom and went on to create hits like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Her music contributions have earned her over 400 career awards, including 6 GRAMMY awards and 22 American Music Awards. Houston, who passed away in 2012, continues to inspire and influence generations of fans and performers.
